Rav Cheema joins our Policy and Campaigns Committee

News / 15.01.2024

We are very pleased to announce that Rav Cheema, Senior Associate at LocatED, has joined our Policy and Campaigns Committee (PCC) for the next three years.

The PCC is Real Estate Balance’s primary equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) activity development forum, and Rav brings to the Committee a wealth of experience and insight to enhance it.

He is a Chartered Surveyor with more than a decade of experience in the private and public sectors and his current role at LocatED – an arm’s length body to the Department for Education – means he is the only one of the 16 PCC members to represent a public sector organisation.

Rav is an active member of LocatED’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee and has worked to strengthen the organisation’s school outreach and work experience programmes, which now includes a greater focus on schools with a higher proportion of pupils with diverse protected characteristics.

He also spoke on the EDI and Youth Pavilion at last year’s UKREiiF conference on his experience of entering the property industry and progressing through it and shared his views on what more should be done to promote real estate’s variety of roles to young people.

Rav’s commitment to progressing EDI is also demonstrated by him winning the Government Property Inclusion Award in 2022.

He said:

“I am happy to have joined the PCC and be part of a movement campaigning for enhanced diversity of people and thought across the property industry.

“When speaking at networking and school events, I have met many people interested in the built environment from diverse backgrounds who show significant potential and determination but have not had access to the same networks and opportunities that their peers may have.

“I believe that by embracing each person’s unique characteristics and experiences, we can develop more effective business strategies which are also more reflective of the communities that we serve."

Real Estate Balance founder and Board Deputy Chair and PCC Chair Suzanne Avery said:

We undertook an open and transparent recruitment process earlier in the year for new PCC members and although we only had two vacancies, we were so impressed with Rav that we also asked him to join the Committee on an interim basis.

“With a number of exciting PCC initiatives planned for the first half of this year and then the launch of our industry-leading EDI Survey in September, it makes complete sense to now formally appoint Rav to the Committee so we can benefit from his energy and expertise.”
