To mark International Women’s Day 2026, Real Estate Balance brought together professionals from across the industry for a live webinar focused on women’s progression, workplace culture and practical action within corporate real estate.
Chaired by Sue Brown, Managing Director at Real Estate Balance, the session featured a panel of senior voices from across the sector:
- Karen Passley, Head of People, Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation
- Julie Fitzsimmins, Co-Founder and Director, Lodestar
- Shivanni Ladwa, Senior HR Business Partner, Westfield
The session was designed as an open, discussion-led conversation, creating space for honest reflection, shared experience and practical insight.
A candid and practical conversation
The panel explored the realities of building a career in real estate, acknowledging both the progress made and the challenges that remain. Discussion centred on the importance of inclusive leadership, the role of organisational culture, and the structural barriers that continue to impact women’s progression.
A key theme throughout was the need to move beyond policy and into everyday behaviours — ensuring inclusion is embedded in how teams operate, how leaders show up, and how opportunities are created and shared.
The power of visibility, sponsorship and action
Speakers highlighted the importance of senior visibility and active sponsorship in driving change. Creating environments where women can see leadership pathways — and feel supported to pursue them — was recognised as critical.
The discussion also touched on the role of employee networks and internal communities in building confidence and connection. Practical examples were shared on how organisations are evolving these networks to be more inclusive, more visible, and more impactful — including giving individuals the opportunity to lead initiatives and shape their direction.
Building confidence and creating opportunity
A strong message from the session was the importance of creating opportunities for individuals to step forward, build confidence and be recognised. Whether through leading internal initiatives, contributing to networks, or speaking up in professional settings, these moments play a key role in career development.
Panellists also emphasised the importance of leadership support — both from senior women and male allies — in reinforcing the value of these initiatives and ensuring they are prioritised within organisations.
Continuing the conversation
The session closed with a reminder that progress requires ongoing commitment and collective action. Real Estate Balance continues to provide a platform for these conversations, encouraging members to share insights, challenge thinking and contribute to the wider industry dialogue.
As highlighted throughout the discussion, creating a more balanced real estate sector is not the responsibility of individuals alone — it requires sustained effort, visible leadership and a willingness to take action at every level.
