Our MD Sue named Outstanding Individual at the EG Awards 2023

News / 18.10.2023

Real Estate Balance Managing Director Sue Brown won the Outstanding Individual Award at the prestigious property industry ceremony on Tuesday October 17th.

Judges concluded that Sue, who they described as a “legendary and vital part of our industry”, deserved the award after a year of success at REB, which included leading on prominent EDI initiatives at MIPIM and UKREiiF, now representing an all-time high of 123 members and so much more.

Under Sue’s stewardship, we also this year released our fourth Industry EDI Survey, which revealed that a stark gender imbalance persists at the top of UK real estate and also analysed the social backgrounds of participants for the very first time.

2023 has also seen us introduce speed reverse mentioning to give senior leaders the opportunity to learn from diverse talent outside of their own companies, and with our members host important discussions on topics including the design of workplaces for women, hybrid working, inclusive recruitment and career progression and parental leave.

Sue joined REB at the height of the pandemic in April 2020 and the first key initiative she pursued was broadening our founding focus on gender to also advocate for EDI in our industry relating to race and ethnicity and social mobility.

In selecting Sue for her deserved recognition, the EG judges said:

This person is the definition of outstanding.

They have been a part of this industry for decades – for some of it, behind the scenes.

This is a person who is so passionate about the property industry, that even in the face of illness – quite serious illness – refused to down tools.

They had a mission.

A mission they are steadfastly committed to and nothing was going to get in their way.

And for those of you who have been asked to lean in, sign up or hand over some money by this person, you’ll know there is absolutely no chance you’ll be able to say no.

She is, without a doubt, a legendary and vital part of our industry.”

Sue enjoyed a very successful career in the real estate industry prior to joining us, having run a communications consultancy with her husband before the business was acquired by Financial Dynamics and then by the US consulting firm FTI Consulting.

After leaving consultancy, she joined London First as Executive Director for Planning and Development.

Sue describes herself as an unreconstructed 1970’s feminist and prior to joining REB had set up the group REWIRE - Recognition and Empowerment of Women in Real Estate - with Sam McClary who was then Deputy Editor of what was then Estates Gazette and who is now Editor of EG.

She was also a prominent member of the Women’s Network at Buckingham Palace.

Sue is the beloved mother of a daughter and a son and is the very proud grandmother of two grandsons.

Everyone at Real Estate Balance, including our Board members, executive team and partners, congratulates Sue on this wonderful and very well-deserved success.
