Real Estate Balance at MIPIM 2024

News / 18.03.2024

Real Estate Balance was once again represented at MIPIM, with our Managing Director Sue Brown, Chair Liz Peace CBE and Board Director Clarence Dixon joining our members in advocating for diverse and inclusive workplaces at the leading property event in Cannes, France.

We work with RX Global, the conference organisers, before and during MIPIM to develop discussions with equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in real estate at heart, but keeping these important issues at the top of the conversational agenda is only possible with the support of dedicated professionals at our member organisations.

The photos included on this web page were even sourced from Real Estate Balance members.

We were involved in a very well-received and landmark event this year, with Knight Frank, Savills and JLL coming together to sponsor a session on the industry response to our NextGen Survey 2023 findings. Carolyn Milligan, the chair of our NextGen Committee, was joined on the London Pavilion by the company's EDI leads to discuss the results. The panellists, pictured above, were:

  • Carolyn Milligan - Senior Associate at Herbert Smith Freehills LLP and NextGen co-chair
  • Hannah Awonuga - Group Head of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Partner at Knight Frank
  • Chanelle Gray - Head of Diversity and Inclusion at Savills
  • Anne-Lyse Raoul - Head of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, EMEA at JLL

Carolyn, pictured below, also presented the results and led the resulting discussion with 20 senior UK real estate leaders on Norton Rose Fulbright's boat.

We were delighted to see so many representatives of our members at the EDI networking brunch hosted by Greystar on the first morning of MIPIM. The speakers at that event included:

  • Clarence Dixon - Global Head of Loan Services, CBRE, and Real Estate Balance Board Director
  • Michela Hancock - Managing Director, Greystar Europe, and Policy and Campaigns Committee member
  • Jules Pipe CBE - Deputy Mayor of London for Planning, Regeneration and Skills

Clarence was also in action on Thursday on the Leader's Perspective Stage, delivering a keynote speech on macroeconomics and raining financing: the latest trends and strategies.

We worked with RX Global the day before on a brilliant panel session on the topic of equalities of opportunities in real estate featuring Guila Clara Kessous from UNESCO, Karen Whitt from Colliers, Christel Zordan from Societe de la Tour Effiel and Nick Brindley from Gerald Eve.

Liz took part in a session hosted by Avison Young called Dare to be Different, which connected industry veterans with up-and-coming property professionals to discuss real estate's future. The main speakers were:

  • Liz Peace CBE - Real Estate Balance
  • Michele Steel - Regeneration Brainery
  • Adina David - Ladies in Real Estate and MGT Investment Management
  • Sammy Pahal - UK PropTech Association

Sue joined Sam McClary from EG and Annabelle Redman from Clyde & Co at The Editors Dinner on Wednesday.

Speaking upon her return to London, Sue said:

"MIPIM 2024 was fantastic and I would like to thank all of the members we worked tirelessly with in the run-up to ensure EDI was a recurring theme throughout. I have been going to MIPIM for many years and slowly but surely more women and ethnic minorities are attending the event and being given prominent speaking positions. Progress is being made both at the conference but also in the UK real estate industry overall, but we must all maintain our commitment to progressing diverse and inclusive workplace cultures."
